Night of 4th August

Despite somewhat unpromising conditions (windy and clear), my best night's trapping so far this year, with more than 100 species in or around the trap for the first time. The most numerous species were Rosy Footman, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, and Cydia splendana, but the catch was notable for variety rather than total numbers.

Among the rarer highlights were an extraordinary-looking Scarce Chocolate-tip, at least three gorgeous Tree-lichen Beauties, and a rather underwhelming Olive Crescent.

I also had a number of other new macros for the garden list. It was a relief to get my first Lychnis at long last - I've lost track of how many Pod-Lovers I've tried to turn into this species - while Iron Prominent, Chocolate-tip, and Twin-spotted Wainscot were welcome additions.

Twin-spotted Wainscot - at last, a wainscot I can actually identify! A rather smart looking one, too - presumably attracted to the 2 square metres of reed bed in my garden pond.

Of course, no trapping session is complete without at least one unidentifiable moth, and this came in the form of this rather handsome Ear, probably Saltern Ear.
